The Post Graduate Diploma in Governance and Management of NGO’s was conceptualised by Karve Institute of Social Service in June 2007, to initiate the process of capacity building of those who lead the NGO’s and prospective candidates interesed in entering into social developmental sector in various capacities and positions. Social development organizations have been implementing various charitable and development programes towards social transformation. The environment for social development has become very dynamic and taking paradigm shift for addressing the millennium development goals. An organization operating in such environment needs to sharpen its Governance, Management and Administration practices.

The NGO is considered as the third wing of development and economic initiatives, first two being the Government and Commercial sector or market sector. The commmercial organizations are profit oriented and therefore their activities per se do not cater the needs of the deprived classes and issues and it has been seen that the development initiatives by the Government has some limitation due to corruption, inefficiencies and political priorities. The NGO sector, therefore, has a pivotal role to play in the societal development. The millennium development goals have gained popularity as new development instrument primarily in development circles for the last two years. There has been an increasing reliance on NGO to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
